When Autism Doesn't Speak: Rethinking Behavior, Communication, and Medication, Beth Koenig

Many autistic individuals who are nonverbal or have childhood apraxia of speech are misunderstood.

(Apraxia is a neurological condition where a person has difficulty planning and carrying out purposeful movements, even though they may have the strength, understanding, and desire to do the movement.)

Behaviors are often treated as problems instead of attempts to communicate, and medications may be prescribed without addressing the underlying challenges.

Beth Koenig is joining Deprescribing for the second time to share her perspective on nonverbal autism, apraxia, communication barriers, and why understanding the "why" behind behaviors is essential. Together, we explore how better assessment, appropriate supports, and a deeper understanding of autism can reduce unnecessary medication while improving quality of life for autistic individuals and their families.
